Our HeritageBrett-Young Seeds was formed in 1934 when Mr. Reg Young joined up with Mr. Bill Brett. Shortly thereafter the first carload of seed was bought and resold at a small profit without having to handle it. Only course grains were handled at this time. The company then began buying and selling alfalfa, clover and other forage grass seeds. As the business grew, more space was required and so construction of a new facility began in 1949 and was completed in 1953. During this time Brett-Young Seeds had a large operation of harvesting, drying, and processing Kentucky bluegrass. Once again the company outgrew its facility and a new facility was built in 1965 to handle the increased volume. At the time it was one of the most up-to-date forage seed processing plants in North America. In 1971, the facility was sold to outside interests at which time Mr. Peter Dyck bought the shares of Brett-Young Seeds. For the next few years Mr. Dyck traded seed out of his office in Winnipeg, and in 1975 he bought the handling facilities for creeping red fescue and bromegrass in Rycroft, Alberta. Then in 1978 the sod was turned for a state-of-the-art forage seed processing plant in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and in 1984 the special crops facility in Gilbert Plains, Manitoba was purchased. We have built a new distribution facility in Calmar Alberta ,completed in the winter of 2006, and incorporated the Prairie Seeds in BrettYoung in 2006. Today we have 4 facilities across W.Canada that clean,blend, package more seed than Canada seeds with canola seed annually. We have a microbiology lab that has developed innovative products to help our customers prosper. Over the past century we established relationships with many first class breeding companies around the world, DSV on canola, Turf Seeds with forages and Dairyland Seeds with forages. It is our almost 100 years of seed experience and those of our seed partners that allows us to floursh and grow. The almost 200 seed professionals at Brett-Young Seeds are grateful to our producers, customers and suppliers who have made the past 72 years possible, and look forward to serving you in the years to come.
